The amazing city on the sea, Neft Daslari is built on oil platforms

In the Caspian Sea, nearly 100km off the coast of Azerbaijan there is an incredible city built on oil platforms.  This is a functioning city with several thousand residents, all of them are connected by a network of trestles across oil platforms.  The city is Neft Daslari, also known as Oil Rocks, and it spans over 300km of trestles to create a suspended city.

Aserbaijan is known as the “Land of Fire” and this is because of the vast oil riches found along its coast.  The country began modern drilling in 1870 after Russia conquered the territory.  It wasn’t until after the first World War that an offshore platform was built.  This was the beginning of Neft Daslari.

The foundation of the city consists of seven ships that were sunk in order to build the platform.  Since this first construction over 2,000 platforms have sprung up with bridges connecting them.  Over these platforms, workers built eight-story apartment blocks, a beverage factory, soccer pitch, library, bakery, laundry, 300-seat cinema, bathhouse, vegetable garden and even a tree-lined park for which the soil was brought from the mainland. At its peak, some 5,000 workers lived here.
